Troubleshooting Cupola
Updated October 20, 2026
Cupola isn't showing up
Cupola lives in the notch (or a pill, on Macs without one, see Using Cupola without a notch) and runs in the background. If you don't see it:
- Confirm it's actually installed and running: check
/Applicationsfor Cupola.app, or reinstall with the one-line Terminal command in Installing Cupola, which is safe to run again even if it's already installed. - Open Cupola's full window directly from
/Applicationsor Spotlight if you can't find the notch/pill, then check Settings › Notch for how it's set to appear.
A permission was denied
If you said no to a Calendars, Reminders or Full Disk Access prompt by accident, go to Settings › Permissions inside Cupola; it shows live status for each one with a Grant or Open Settings button. Calendars, Reminders and Full Disk Access changes only apply after Cupola restarts, so after granting one in System Settings, look for the Restart row in Settings › Permissions and use it. Full details on each permission: Permissions Cupola asks for, and specifically Full Disk Access for Notes.
Checking your version and updating
Cupola updates itself in the background through Sparkle, an established macOS auto-update framework, checking automatically once a day by default. To check your current version or look for an update by hand:
- Press ⌘ , to open Settings, and go to General.
- Your installed version is shown there, alongside Release Notes and a Check for Updates… button.
If an update is available, Cupola downloads and installs it after a confirmation; it doesn't install updates silently unless you've turned on automatic downloads. If Cupola still looks out of date after checking, reinstalling with the Terminal command in Installing Cupola always gets you the latest version directly.
Notes acting unreliable
If notes are missing, slow to appear, or Cupola mentions "Limited mode," it almost always means Full Disk Access isn't granted, or Notes' database couldn't be read for another reason. See Why Cupola asks for Full Disk Access for the exact fix.
Sending feedback or reporting a bug
Cupola has in-app feedback: open Settings › Feedback, pick Bug or Feedback, fill in a title and description (a screenshot is optional), and send it. It goes straight to the Cupola team along with your Cupola and macOS version, and you can see what this Mac has sent further down the same page.
Still stuck
Email [email protected]: a real person reads it, and it's the right channel for anything involving your license key, a refund, or an issue Settings › Feedback doesn't cover.
Give your notch something to do.
